⚠️ What just happened?
- The UK government have approved the development of Equinor’s controversial Rosebank oil field. This comes after widespread opposition including actions across the UK and Norway, 700 scientists, 200 organisations and celebrities, 40 MEPs and MPs from every major political party.
- What is Rosebank? Rosebank is the biggest undeveloped oil field in the UK. The owners are Equinor, the Norwegian state-owned oil giant, and Ithaca energy, the company that bought Cambo.
- With this decision, the government is siding with oil and gas giants over a liveable future for all—whether that’s a habitable planet, or not having to choose between heating and eating.
- While the government touts that the approval is to increase the UK’s energy security, we know it’s not. If it was, we’d be retrofitting homes and unblocking onshore wind. This is about Equinor making as much money as possible. Thanks to a huge subsidy, the UK public would effectively £3 billion to Rosebank’s owners - including Norwegian oil giant Equinor - just to develop the field.
- Why is this an issue?
- Rosebank would be catastrophic for the climate. Scientists have said time and time again that we can't have any more new oil and gas if we want to limit global warming to 1.5C. Adding new reserves, like Rosebank, will push us closer to parts of our world becoming uninhabitable. The CO2 from burning the fossil fuels in just this ONE SINGLE oil field would be equal to the annual CO2 emissions of the 28 countries in the lowest income countries combined.
- Rosebank won’t do anything to lower our energy bills, or make our energy supply safer, but will make millions for oil & gas companies.
- Rosebank is situated right next to a marine protected area and poses a direct threat to the endangered and threatened species that call that area home.
- Every new field like this locks workers in places like Aberdeen into risky jobs in oil & gas, and delays the transition to decent unionised green jobs.

➡️ What now?
- It’s not over. We’ve seen before that the UK government will back down, will u-turn, will bend to the will of the people if enough of us fight back. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do.
- Thousands of us came together and forced oil giant Shell to pull out of the development of the Cambo oil field in the North Sea. Last year activists in Norway forced Equinor to pause the Wisting oil field. This is proof that we can win.
- We’re going to bring the fight to the UK government, to the Prime Minister and to every cabinet member that sanctioned this decision.
- We’re going to challenge every MP and MSP, every political party that continues to remain silent on new oil & gas. We’re going to take on Equinor, the oil giant behind Rosebank, wherever they show their faces. We’re going to call out the hypocrisy of the Norwegian government who claims to be a climate leader while their state-owned oil company continues to invest in climate-wrecking fossil fuels.
